Tesla is preparing to launch its robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, on June 12, 2025, marking its first major step into autonomous ride-hailing. The initial pilot will feature around 10 modified Model Y vehicles operating with autonomous driving capabilities under human supervision in limited areas. Tesla plans to expand the fleet to 1,000 vehicles over the following months, with long-term ambitions to deploy more than a million self-driving vehicles nationwide by the end of 2026.

The service, which will be accessed through the Tesla app, will initially be invite-only. Vehicle owners will have the option to include their Teslas in the robotaxi fleet, with potential earnings estimated at up to $30,000 annually.

Tesla also unveiled its first purpose-built autonomous vehicle—the Cybercab—in October 2024. Designed specifically for robotaxi operations, the two-seat electric vehicle features no steering wheel or pedals and includes butterfly doors and a minimalist interior. Production of the Cybercab is expected to begin in 2026, with a projected starting price below $30,000.

Tesla’s autonomy strategy continues to rely solely on cameras and artificial intelligence, rejecting the use of LiDAR and radar sensors. While the approach has drawn both interest and skepticism, the company faces ongoing technological, regulatory, and public trust challenges as it moves toward broader deployment.
