Alex Palou Wins 109th Running Of Indy 500

Alex Palou Wins First Indianapolis 500, Continues Dominant 2025 IndyCar Season

Alex Palou earned his first Indianapolis 500 victory on Sunday, adding another highlight to an already dominant 2025 IndyCar Series season. The win marks his fifth victory in six races and makes him the first Spanish driver to win the prestigious event.

Palou made his decisive move with 14 laps remaining, passing Marcus Ericsson into Turn 1. Ericsson was caught behind two lapped cars and lifted slightly, giving Palou the opportunity to slip through. From there, Palou maintained control, expertly using the draft from the slower cars ahead to stay out of reach and hold off Ericsson, David Malukas, and Pato O’Ward.

The race ended under caution after Nolan Siegel crashed on the final lap, but Palou had already built a comfortable gap and appeared firmly in command.

Despite leading just the final 14 laps, Palou’s win was the result of patience and strategy. He remained in the mix throughout the race and waited for the perfect opportunity to strike. His performance further cements his status as the championship favorite, having only missed victory once this year—a second-place finish to Kyle Kirkwood at Long Beach.

After crossing the finish line, Palou celebrated emotionally, running down the frontstretch to embrace his crew and his father, Ramon.

“I cannot believe it. What an amazing day, what an amazing race,” Palou said afterward.
